AUSPICE UNVEILS THE LATEST ADDITION TO ITS OPSLOGIC™ BROADBAND SOLUTION SUITE - THE AUTOMATED IP ADDRESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM-IPAMS FOR EXTENDED ENTERPRISES, ISPS, AND IP-BASED SERVICE PROVIDERS

Provides a Web-based, Fully Integrated Solution for the Inventory and Utilization Management of IPv4 Address Space and Automation of Critical Tasks for Monitoring and Updating IP Scopes

FRAMINGHAM, MA- February 18, 2003 - Auspice Corporation, The Enterprise Control™ Company, today introduced the latest addition to its OpsLogic™ Broadband Solution Suite which addresses the challenges of managing cross-network environments comprised of physical networks, devices, and business applications that together facilitate and support mission-critical business operational activities in Network Operations Centers, customer interaction services, and mobile field operations, for increased operational reliability and efficiencies. The new solution was born out of a need to help today's stretched service providers and networked enterprises to automate and simplify the management of IP address utilization and assignment- a labor-intensive task that results in increased operations costs.

Essentially, every device that communicates over the Internet is assigned an IP address, which identifies that device and distinguishes it from other devices on the Internet. Today, IP addresses are assigned and managed by a largely laborious and manual process, where addresses are often committed to spreadsheets for assignment and tracking. The Auspice automated solution, The IP Address Management System (IPAMS), allows extended enterprises and service providers of all types- MSPs, ISPs, ASPs, to better manage the assignment and utilization of IP Address space by providing the ability to automatically track and manage both public and private IP address blocks and to specify how those address blocks will be used. IPAMS also provides additional control of the automated IP Address process by allowing administrators to approve or disapprove the assignment and intervene as needed. Manual assignments of addresses can also be entered into the inventory as needed. Additionally, a trouble ticket can be opened to track this process through integration with a trouble ticketing system.

As part of the integrated IPAMS solution, IP inventory information is provided through an rwhois server to registry authorities, such as the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN).

The integrated IPAMS solution monitors the utilization of all the IP scopes and automates new assignments to servers and network devices. IPAMS automatically obtains utilization from DHCP servers and updates the IP inventory database. When utilization exceeds a configurable threshold, IPAMS determines the correct size and type of block to add to the depleted scopes, based on previous usage, and searches the IP inventory for a free block of the correct size. This new address information is also configured and verified on the network device.

Key features and benefits of the OpsLogic™ IP Address Management System include:

  • An easy-to-use, web-based interface that simplifies an enterprise's or service provider's IP address space management process

  • The ability to manage both public and private IP address space

  • The ability to manage address space for multiple ISPs or IP-based service providers over local or wide-area network, cable modem, DSL, or traditional dial-up

  • Ability to automatically update address utilization and request additional address blocks from registry authorities

  • Assurance that net blocks are assigned on proper boundaries

  • Ability to prevent DHCP servers from depleting scopes that will affect customer connectivity

  • The ability to audit the DHCP servers, IP inventory, network devices, and any third party database to ensure service availability by checking the IP addresses are assigned and implemented consistently

According to Rick Berthold, CTO of Auspice, "Our IPAMS solution was born out of the necessity by one of the industry's largest MSOs, to remove the repetitive, error prone steps associated with manual assignment, utilization tracking and provisioning of new IP address space. Today's MSOs and other IP-based service providers no longer have to perform this service-critical task manually, when they can do it error-free and more efficiently by utilizing a fully integrated and automated IP Address Management System."
